THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Finding Opportunities in Every Discouragement

On Saturday June 23, I experienced an event that left me nothing short of speechless. Because our Cancer support group, Lifting Hearts, was in desperate need of funds, the officers put together a huge yard sale. I don’t frequent yard sales, although I see them from time to time on Saturdays as we drive about town. However, I have seen nothing as big or as well planned as the one I witnessed first hand that day.

I arrived at 7AM ready to work. Denise had been at Robinson Park since about 5 AM to reserve our spot since they operate on a first come first serve basis. When I arrived the tent was already set up for the bake sale which was to be my post. The men were moving countless tables into place to display the items that had been gathered for a few weeks. Since I had not been involved in the gathering process, I wondered what would fill them. On one end of the park were six or seven huge racks for hanging the clothes which had been donated. I was in awe of the organization I was witnessing even though none of the items had yet arrived.

Next, the trucks and trailers began to arrive with the items we would sell. They were all priced and packed in boxes according to their contents (house wares, accessories, decorations, baby items, books, appliances, clothes and on and on.) Kara told me that they had several garages full of items donated. Not only were the clothes racks full, but many of the tables were overloaded with clothes as well. Although the yard sale actually started at 8:30, people began arriving before we were ready to help them.

You can imagine my surprise when Kara brought out the cash register and began to set it up. This was a first class operation and I was glad to be a part of it! We had a steady stream of shoppers until noon when my shift was over. Because the clothing items were marked so low ($.50 for children’s items and $1.00 for adult items) I saw several parents fill huge shopping bags full of clothes for their family members. The yard sale went until 6PM and after it was over many clothes and items were given to families who were in need and also to Deseret Industries. Also, Lifting Hearts made over $2500.00. Needless to say it was a win-win situation for everyone involved.

I read somewhere that some people find opportunities in every discouragement while others find discouragement in every opportunity. I could only imagine how much time it took to gather, price, box, store, and transport the items we sold that day. I chuckled as I thought of myself organizing such an event. I would not have known where to start! But thanks to the efforts of the board members, their families, many Cancer survivors and others, Lifting Hearts took advantage of a great opportunity, which enabled them to continue to help the women who benefit from their loving care. And I can keep writing the Thursday Thoughts which I enjoy doing so much. I am so proud to belong to this wonderful and capable group of women.

P.S. My thanks goes out to everyone who helped with the yard sale in any way.  It was amazing to see everyone come together, and I agree with Kathy... we will now be able to continue helping many women.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!  -Kara

MONDAY MOTIVATION - Generostiy and Gratitude

G.B. Stern said: "Silent gratitude isn't much use to anyone."  I can be silent no longer...

I've been gathering items for our Lifting Hearts yard sale (this coming Saturday - June 23rd), and I've been amazed and humbled, and extremely grateful for all of those who have donated items to us.  I was gone all day on Saturday, driving around to different yard sales, picking up leftover items to use at our yard sale, and when I got home, imagine my surprise when I walked into my basement and it was FULL - literally FULL - of items that people had delivered to my house.  There is really not one bit of space to even walk in!

This group is SO important to me, and I hope to other survivors as well.  We are running out of funds, and because it takes money to run a support group this large, I'm worried that unless we can raise more funds, we won't be able to offer this support group much longer.  That, in my opinion, would be tragic.

Apparently, many of you feel the same way - at least, your contributions witness to that.  Thank you SO MUCH for being so generous!

We are still taking in donations of items for the yard sale. Please contact me, and I'll tell you where to drop your items off: 801-360-4666.

*monetary donations are always welcome!

Love,
Kara

TUESDAY TIDINGS - Support Meeting and Yard Sale Fundraiser

REMINDER:  Our June's support meeting is THIS THURSDAY, the 14th, at 7:00 pm.  In case you haven't heard, we are NOT meeting at the law offices where we normally meet.  This month only, we are meeting at Studio 1 Dance Center.  The owners have graciously agreed to let us use several rooms in the dance studio.  How nice is that??!!  The address is: 1484 N. State Street in Orem.

We are super excited for this meeting!  We are starting the summer with an exercise class.

We'll have two different instructors there - you can try either one:

We are learning ZUMBA!!!  The instructor's name is  Keri Ann Salsbury  I don't know about you, but I'm really happy that we are learning Zumba.  (It's kind of a dance-type exercise)  It's sounds like SO much fun.

We'll also have Linda Black teaching a YOGA class - Linda has joined us before, and she is wonderful.  This will be a much slower class.

I hope you'll be able to make it to this fun support meeting, and learn some new "moves" while you hang out with other survivors.  Dress in something comfortable, and bring a water bottle if you'd like.  We'll have some ice water there.

If exercise is not your thing... please come anyway. Our main reason for meeting is to be able to share our experiences with cancer and get support.

YOU ARE WELCOME TO BRING FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO JOIN US IN THESE CLASSES - we'd love to fill up the rooms!

Call me with any questions:  Kara @ 801-360-4666

ONE MORE THING:  We are having a Lifting Hearts YARD SALE a week from Saturday (on the 23rd).  We DESPERATELY need your donations for this sale.  We have a great location, and we'll be able to raise quite a bit of money that day, IF we have things to sell.  It can be anything - household goods, clothes,  books, crafts, toys, etc.  If each of our members could bring 4 things to our meeting this Thursday, or to my house, we would have over 400 items to sell!  (We also need baked goods for the "Bake Sale" that will go along with the yard sale, so if you are a cook, drop off individually wrapped, baked goods on Friday to my house (5359 W. Earl Place, Highland).  Ladies... we would LOVE to continue providing this support group for survivors, but we REALLY need money to do it.  If you can't help in any other way, please make a donation.  Checks can be made out to Lifting Hearts, and can be sent to my address. Thank you for your generosity.  I'm hoping to see a TON of items for the yard sale at our support meeting this week. ;)
