TUESDAY TIDINGS - New Website, Facebook, and Twitter

Hopefully, this will explain why I didn't post yesterday... I was being held hostage - by a website! After many LONG hours of pulling my hair out (what little I have... thank you Chemo), our new official website has arrived! Now, I don't claim to be anything even remotely close to a website designer, so don't expect too much. However, I will promise you one thing: it will get better! Right now, we are in the process of begging/bribing someone to take the simple website I've created and do something special with it.

Currently, though, there are several tabs with information; a cute picture of our group at the top; and some kind-of-funky colors. One of our members asked if we could post some information about helping breast cancer patients, so I've written one article, and I've also shared some "expert" opinions - from some of our members. Those two posts can be found right on the home page of the website.

So, hop on over there and enjoy your stay.

Oh, and by-the-way... we can now be found on facebook (look for Lifting Hearts, with our logo), and you can follow us on Twitter as well: @LiftingHearts.

My, aren't we just the most SOCIAL group??!!

Have a great day, ladies!

MONDAY MENTIONABLES and TUESDAY TIDINGS - Supporting Each Other

I hope you all had a great long weekend, and a fun Labor Day. Today's post is kind of a combination for yesterday and today. This week, at our support meeting, we will be announcing our NEW NAME and NEW LOGO for the support group. Most of you can see that we've changed names, since the name of our blog is different, but this is our official little "kick-off" for the "new" group.

A little background here... 15 months ago, Colette, Bethanie, and I, along with Dr. Jon Bishop and his staff, created a breast cancer support group called Sister Survivors. We've had a great year of monthly support meetings, activities, and service projects. We also launched, as part of our group, a one-on-one mentoring program, called Bosom Buddies. Over the last year, our numbers have grown to over 75 survivors, and we've tried to provide a support group that can help those survivors to get through their treatments, and move beyond that - to find health, and joy in our lives again. It's been a wonderful thing for the 3 of us to be involved with other survivors in our quest to help and give back after our own cancer journeys.

Earlier this year, Dr. Bishop and his new office staff decided to split from our group, and form another group here in Utah Valley. The reason for the split is simply our differing ideas of what a survivor needs to "move on", and get her life back in order. There is no right or wrong answer to that, but as survivors ourselves, Colette, Bethanie, and I felt like we had a unique perspective and would be able to really connect on a very important level with each survivor. Our doctors and other medical personnel who help us through our cancer journeys play a VERY important and vital role in our lives for the short time that we are going through treatments. However, at some point, we as survivors, must step away from that team and take back control of our lives, and move forward. Moving forward can be a challenge, though. It isn't easy to get past the tests, treatments, surgeries, and check-ups. But, it is necessary. We can't rely on those things forever. Cancer is a traumatizing event in our lives, and we know from experience that being able to talk to other survivors is key to our recovery. So, it seems that a support group for cancer survivors, run by survivors, is best. We do stay in contact with doctors - oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and plastic surgeons - so that we can provide the best support and information to our members.

So, after having run Sister Survivors for so long, we found ourselves without a name or identity, but still supporting over 75 women with monthly meetings and one-on-one mentoring. We've continued to run "the support group" since the split in February. We had a very difficult time coming up with a new name - we went through literally hundreds of suggestions. Over and over. Nothing clicked. And then, one day I was listening to the song Bethanie wrote last year for the big kick off of Sister Survivors support group. As I listened to that beautiful song again, the words had a big impact on me, and a few of those words stood out. When I mentioned those words to the other members of our board, they all got excited - we had finally found our new identity!

I thought today, I would post the words of Bethanie's song here, and give you a chance to read through it. This song has special meaning to all members of Sister Survivors - now Lifting Hearts breast cancer support group. Enjoy! (these words and the song are copyrighted, and all rights reserved. Please do not re-post, or share, anywhere else without asking our permission. Thank you.)

WISDOM'S SISTER

In the twilight of the evening,
On a dark and starry night
Walked a woman with a candle,
Spreading dancing trails of light
Her hand stretched out to succor
All those touched by cancer's call
When the words that shatter senses
Make kinswomen of us all

Wisdom's sister, take my hand,
Give me grace to understand
Wisdom's sister, walk beside me when I falter,
On a path I never planned

With the dawn, the light spreads outward,
Granting warmth and light to earth
Lifting hearts and hands together,
Giving place for a rebirth
Share the walk and share the wisdom,
Of a road both long and real
A simple gift, a sweet renewal,
Comes with trusting we can heal

Wisdom's sister, take my hand,
Give me grace to understand
Wisdom's sister, walk beside me when I falter,
On a path I never planned
Sister, help me understand
Wisdom's sister, take my hand.

As you can see, the words of Bethanie's song really support our ideas of helping other survivors. Anyone who is a member of this support group - or any support group - is automatically put in the position of succoring other survivors. (The light spreads outward, granting warmth and light). What a gift!

Please join us for our monthly support meeting - this Thursday night, Sept 8th, at 7:00 pm, at our regular meeting place - the law offices of Fillmore Spencer attorneys. 3301 No. University Ave. (Jamestown area), Provo. If you have any questions, please call me @ (801)360-4666.

Have a great day!

TUESDAY TIDINGS: June's Support Group Meeting

Two things for today:

1. I came across an interesting article, entitled "How Blogging Is Good For Your Breasts". The name alone caused me to pause and read the article! The article appears on Health.com, and starts: "Studies show that expressive writing and talk therapy can help women with breast cancer feel better. It follows, then, that the electronic equivalent of such things, i.e., blogging, would also be good for your health." To read the full article, click on the link above.

It's an interesting idea - writing to help heal. This is something I've believed in for a long time - in fact, I'm writing my cancer story right now - using the posts I did on my cancer blog, Foob Babe's Cancer Journey. In July, our support group meeting will be discussing how to record your cancer story. We'll have two speakers/teachers: one who will teach us how to scrapbook our story, and one that will teach us how to write our story. I hope you'll join us to talk about these different coping methods.

On this blog, we've started our own list of breast cancer blogs that are helpful. Take a few minutes to visit these blogs (found on the left hand side bar). A few are members' blogs, and others are blogs that our members have found helpful.

If you are interested in starting your own cancer blog, let me know and I'd be happy to show you the ropes. ;-)

2. This Thursday is our Support Group meeting. The topic is: Dealing With Cancer Physically, Emotionally, and Spiritually. We will be dividing into groups, and talking about each of these subjects.

We'll meet at 7:00 at the Law office of Spencer Fillmore: 3301 N. University Ave. Provo.

Hope to see you there!

TUESDAY TIDINGS - Pilates in the Park

I got an email from the Young Survivor Sisters - a survivor group that I belong to here in Utah (I think it's for 45 years and younger). They were informing their members about an event called Pilates in the Park. It's sponsored by The Christi Anderson Rack Pack Foundation, located in Sandy, UT. It's on Saturday, June 25th, at 10:00 am. For a $15 donation, you are invited to participate in a Pilates session in the park, and, afterward, a brunch. All proceeds will help benefit breast cancer patients in Utah. Here is the flier (click on it to enlarge):

I encourage you to participate in this. Also, please visit the Rack Pack's website for more information on their non-profit foundation... CHRISTI ANDERSON RACK PACK FOUNDATION

TUESDAY TIDINGS: Christmas Party this Thursday night...

Sorry this blog hasn't been updated for the last week. This is the busiest time of the year - at least for me! ;-)

The news for today is about the Christmas Party this Thursday night at my house. I've sent out an email to everyone on the list. Phone calls will be going out hopefully today to all who don't have email. We now have 51 members! Here is the information I sent to the email list:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The party will be held on Thursday, December 9th, from 6:30-9:00. It's an open house, so even if you can't come for the entire party, please try to stop by to say "hi". The party will be at Kara's house. My address is 5359 W. Earl Place, Highland.
Directions: (let me apologize in advance for the silly construction)
From south: take I-15 to the Thanksgiving Point exit (this is the last exit before going around the point of the mountain into Salt Lake Valley). Turn right (East) - going toward Timpanogos Mountain. Go about 7-8 miles. You'll come up into the middle of Highland. There will be a Kohlers grocery store on the right, along with a Dominoes Pizza and Subway. At that light (Alpine Highway), turn right. Go 1 mile. This will take you through 1 traffic light. After the light, take the first left into the subdivision. My house is the first (corner) house on the right side of the street. It's the only one without Christmas lights! Haha! (a landmark is my neighbors house - the first on the left side - it has a HUGE flagpole in the front yard. You really can NOT miss it!).
If any of you are coming from the north - just take that first exit as you come around the point of the mountain - Thanksgiving Point/Timpanogas, and follow these same directions.
If you live close to me, hopefully the landmarks that I've mentioned will help you find the place.
There are different ways to come, but these are the easiest directions to follow, I think.
We will be doing two fun things for the party (besides having several door prizes/presents, food, and hanging out with friends)...
1. If you'd like to participate in our COOKIE EXCHANGE, please bring a plate of your favorite Christmas treat (cut them into bite size pieces if you can), and copies of the recipes to exchange. Plan on around 40 copies. This will really help me with the food, so I appreciate everyone who can participate.
2. If you'd like to participate in our BOOK EXCHANGE, bring a copy of one of your favorite books (new). Please wrap the book, so no one can see it. We will put all of the books together. If you bring a book, you can go home with one.
***IMPORTANT*** You don't have to do either the cookie, or book, exchange. If you choose not to do those, PLEASE come anyway. Those are totally optional. If you don't bring a book, you just won't go home with one. No big deal. If you don't bring a treat, I promise there will be PLENTY of food. So, no worries.
This is an adult party - no kids please. It's not that I don't love kids, but my house won't hold that many people at once. ;-)
You can, of course, bring your husband, or your friend, or your sister, or whoever - or come by yourself. I would just like to know how many will be coming, so that I can plan the food accordingly. So, PLEASE R.S.V.P. to me - either reply to this email, or call me at 801-360-4666. If you know of someone who is not part of our group, but should be, please invite them.
I'm so excited to have you all here. Christmas is my favorite time of year, and I'm excited to share my home with all of you.
I look forward to hearing from you - let me know: 1) how many will be coming 2) if you will be bringing treats, and 3) if you are participating in the book exchange.
THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Some of Our Member Survivors Featured in Forbes Magazine...
A few months ago, a writer from Forbes Magazine contacted me through this blog. She discovered the Sister Survivors blog while working on a story about illness in the workplace for the Leadership/Careers section of the magazine. She was, quote, "writing about how employees should deal empathetically and respectfully with a colleague who may have fallen ill." She asked if I could put her in touch with some survivors who could answer some questions for the article. I email the survivors on our list about this. I haven't heard anything about it since that time.
Yesterday I received an email from the writer - Sara Peck. She sent me the link for her article. I was surprised to find, as I read the article, that all of the women interviewed were from our group! Here is the link, if you are interested in reading the article at Forbes...
THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Excited!!!!!
I feel like a kid on Christmas day - but, this is WAY better than Santa Claus.
Tonight - just a few short hours from now - is our "Share the Journey" Kick-off for Sister Survivors. We set up last night, and today is going to be a busy, trying-to-get-last-minute-things-done kind of day.
With that said, I'd better get moving! See you tonight!
(See Tuesday's post for the time/address/etc.)
TUESDAY TIDINGS - Sister Survivors Kick Off!
THIS WEEK IS THE WEEK!!! Our Sister Survivors Kick Off is on Thursday, October 28, at 7:00 pm.
Show up right at 7:00, because we'll be holding a silent auction for 1/2 hour before the program starts. There's LOTS of great auction items, so don't forget your wallet! ;-) There are several things I'm so excited to bid on. I just hope I get one of them! I think the thing I want the most is the beautiful beaded watch. Or, the designer fabric apron. Or, maybe, the ridiculously CUTE 3 foot snowman! I can't decide!
At 7:30, we'll start the program, which will include a beautiful song written by Bethanie Newby - one of our Sister Survivors, and the keynote speaker (it's a surprise). We'll also have a slideshow, with pictures of our Sister Survivors, and the doctors and nurses who helped them. (I'm just SO excited for you to see pictures of me bald! Yeah.)
Then, after the program, there will be 15 more minutes to check your bids, and/or bid some more. And then, the auction will be over!
Add some super YUMMY desserts, a 300 piece art gallery, a witch's cottage, a castle, and a german village - oh, and some elephants, giraffes, and a gorilla - and it's going to be a FUN night!
Bring your family and friends (12 years and older), and join us. If you haven't RSVP'd yet, please email sistersurvivors@gmail.com, or call Dr. Bishop's office at (801) 802-0120, and let us know how many you are coming with.
The address is: 110 South Main, Lindon UT - It's just off of State Street - near Wallaby's Smokehouse and the China Lilly restaurant.
See you there!!!!
Pictures from our Sister Survivor Booth at the Women's Expo
Thought you might enjoy seeing pictures of the booth Sister Survivors shared with Dr. Tittensor's Mountains for Mammograms, at the Women's Expo this past weekend...
ANNOUNCEMENT...
Today, at UVU, the Women's Expo started. It runs through tomorrow. Sister Survivors has a booth there that we are sharing with Mountains for Mammograms. We'd love to have you stop by and visit us. There's some fun FREE stuff - including Saltair Salt Water Taffy (colored pink of course), breast cancer support stickers in pink, and a pink flier with our 6-month calendar and information about Sister Survivors. While there, make sure to support our group by buying a pink Sister Survivors bracelet for just $1. With the purchase of each bracelet, you'll get a pink ticket to enter into the drawing we are having. The prize is a beautiful Scensy Candle Warmer (bet you can't guess what color it is!) and 3 Scensy candle scents.
While you're at the booth, please take a minute to talk to us about Mountains for Mammograms - brought to you by Dr. Jennifer Tittensor and her husband, Zach. Here is a little bit of information about this wonderful fundraiser, which will provide FREE mammograms for women who can't afford them:
"When found early, breast cancer is a curable disease. Our goal is to provide free mammograms to those women in greatest need.We know many women who have breast cancer. Some will be cured, but some will not. Getting regular mammograms is the best screening tool we have to find cancer when it is curable. Rather than just donating money, Zach felt it would mean much more to ride to “earn” the tests.
American Fork Hospital and the Utah County Health Department have agreed to sponsor a free mammogram for each 5,000 vertical feet Zach climbs on his bike. Utah Valley Radiologists have agreed to read the mammograms for free as well. The goal is for 50 mammograms--thats a quarter of a million vertical feet!! The project has pushed Zach to ride harder and longer than ever. So far he has climbed 125,000 since the beginning of July!! After his ride in The Tour of Utah, he will be at 150,000 feet. This act of hard training (and pain) makes the project much more personal, as our lives have been touched by so many with this devastating disease."
You'll be able to read some survivors stories from a few of our own Sister Survivors on the Mountains for Mammograms website in the very near future.
Thanks for your support, and we hope you have a great time this weekend at the Women's Expo!
