MONDAY MOTIVATION/THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Only One Purpose

I haven't shared Kathy's Thursday Thoughts for a few weeks, so I thought I'd post one here today.  I thank her SO much for these words.  There are days when I just need to hear that what we are doing is helping and making a difference - exactly what we set out to do. Kathy's next post will be on Thursday...

I love my job at the bank because I meet such fascinating people and they teach me so much. Randy is one of those people. He is probably in his mid forties. He is severely handicapped and mentally challenged. He is deaf and therefore has difficulty speaking, but he holds down a job and brings his deposits into the bank on a regular basis. Karen is a woman who has taken Randy under her wing. She told me one day, “I loved him the minute I met him.”  She has learned sign language and she (along with her husband) brings him in to help him with his finances. I love to see them when they come in. There is no fanfare and no public recognition…just love and charity being displayed in its purest form.

Seeing them makes me think of the many people who have touched my life. Most are not public figures and they probably don’t have huge bank accounts or drive the biggest and best cars. But their hearts are full of genuine concern and love. Among these are the women in our organization Lifting Hearts. They are organized for only one purpose…to lend support and love to those who are suffering from the rigors of Breast Cancer. They are among the most  noble women I know.

I was drawn to a song written by Alan Jackson about his father. The entire song was worth listening to, but the chorus catches the spirit I am trying to create in this week’s blog. It goes like this:

And he Bowed his head to Jesus
And he stood for Uncle Sam
And he only loved one woman
Was always proud of what he had
He said his finest contribution
Was the ones he left behind
Raised on the ways and gentle kindness
Of a small town southern man

Although I was not raised in the south, the chorus of this song resonated with me deeply even the first time I heard it, because I know so many unsung heroes like the one Jackson sang about. While our society seems to be fascinated with the lives of the rich and famous, I feel that perhaps equal or even more attention should be given to those who are noble and unknown, for they are the backbone of this nation. We also need to recognize that all of us have a circle of influence that is greater than we realize, and if we each invest ourselves in doing all we can to lighten the load for the people in our circle, the world becomes a more pleasant place for all of us. Although most of our lives do not play out on a public stage, we can add a great measure of joy to those we serve, just like Karen does for Randy, and the women of Lifting Hearts do for those who are progressing through their Breast Cancer journeys. There are endless opportunities to do this and I for one, plan to be more aware and a little less self absorbed so that I can bring at least a few more smiles to those within my circle.

MONDAY MENTIONABLES - Titles We Give Ourselves

Last Thursday, at our support meeting, we heard from a breast cancer survivor - a member of Lifting Hearts. And there is something that she said that has caused me to reevaluated my life, and my priorities. As she introduced herself, she listed all of her titles, some of which were... Wife ~ Mother ~ Sister ~ Friend ~Psychologist ~ Cancer Survivor. Then, at one point in her talk, she acknowledged that we were all survivors, and that is a great thing. But, then she cautioned us to not let the title of "survivor" be the first title we give ourselves.

The next day, I saw this quote by Goethe: "Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least." Now, I'm not saying that some of the things we do in our lives - some of the roles and titles we take on - are the "least", but they definitely are less important than other roles.

I've done a lot of thinking this week, and I've made some pretty heavy decisions:

1. I'm stepping away from a charity I've been volunteering at - Four of Hearts. I was on the board of directors - their financial director - and now... I'm not. It took up a tremendous amount of time, and although the things I did with this charity were good, compared to time with my family, they were the "least".

2. I've also decided to get a part time job. This is a hard decision for me - although I'm feeling so much better after dealing with breast cancer, and I can now work with no problem, I've enjoyed the time I've had at home, working on things that are important to me. However, my family needs the extra income, and so... I'm going back to work.

The one thing that I can't, and won't, give up, is my time spent on Lifting Hearts. This group, with all of the wonderful survivors I've met, is my lifeline. I am happy when I'm helping the women in this group, and I don't ever want to quite. These decisions are going to change my life a bit - the efforts that I put into Four of Hearts will now be directed at producing an income for my family that will go to college tuition and funding LDS missions for my kids. I'll have to arrangement my time a bit differently, depending on the job I get, so that I'll have time for my family (first) and Lifting Hearts (second). All of these changes are making me a bit nervous.

However, I'm happy with the changes I've made so far. I'm happy to focus more on my family. I'm still a survivor, but that title has moved down on my list a little bit. And the more important titles are at the top - I'm a wife and a mother first. It's time to move the "survivor" title down the list, take the things I've learned from being a survivor, and apply them to the rest of my life.

MONDAY MENTIONABLES - Fostering Miracles, Molding Character

This last Saturday, our Lifting Hearts group held a breast cancer awareness fair, in cooperation with Fresh Market in American Fork. It was a busy day, and I had a great time talking to women about breast cancer. What made it even more enjoyable were the "sister survivors" that I spent the day with.

I've been thinking about those women who shared the day with me, and how much I admire their attitudes, their courage, and their perseverance. It's not easy to deal with a cancer diagnosis, but it is possible. To get through cancer with hope and patience is also possible.

Zig Ziglar once said: "You cannot tailor make your situation in life, but you can tailor make your attitudes to fit those situations."

This is what I see in almost every survivor I meet. They are women who have taken a bad situation - one that can be overpowering, terrifying, and way too big to handle, and they've turned that situation into something that will foster miracles, and mold their characters.

I so admire those qualities that these women hold - love, charity, patience, courage, sisterly kindness - the list is almost endless.

Thanks for sharing the day with me, and helping me remember what watching out for each other means.

Here's to you, my fellow survivors!

MONDAY MEMOIRS - Support Groups

I've been thinking all day of what I want to write for Monday. We haven't done a Monday Memoirs lately, so I'll give you something to think about, and write in your cancer journal...

This last Thursday, our support group had it's summer picnic. We had a great turn-out: 120 is the final count. We were so pleased that our members and their families would come and hang out and visit with us. It was a fun-filled night. I'm not going to recap everything that happened - I'll leave that to Colette for next Monday.

But, I do want to talk about support groups.
Here are some questions you might want to include in your cancer journal...

Is having a support group during your cancer journey important to you? What is the most important thing a support group can do for you? If you do belong to a support group, will you continue to attend after you are finished with treatments?

(our support group last year - we now have over 75 members!)

I've pondered these questions quite a bit lately. Mostly because our support group is going through some growing pains right now, and I guess I want confirmation that what we are doing is important. I want to know that the time spent on providing a good support group for the women in our area is justified. I believe that being able to "give back" and serve other women who have breast cancer is part of the healing process - at least, it is for me.

I didn't go to a support group during my treatments, but I wish I could have. There wasn't really one available. There is now. I hope the support group we have is making an impact on our members.

Take a few minutes to answer the questions above in your journal. And then, if you have any suggestions for our support group, post a comment here. We always welcome that.

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us." -Albert Schweitzer

Have a great day!

MONDAY MEMOIRS - Social Networks...

I read today, in a post by Brenda Coffee (BreastCancerSisterhood.com), the following:

"I read a Vanderbilt University Medical Center study that said breast cancer survivors with a strong social network and a feeling of social well-being live longer."

What an interesting thing. It reassures me that our group - Sister Survivors - is going to make a difference. Being able to get together with a group of fellow survivors is important. Learning together, exercising together,
crying together, etc., will help us all. And I whole-heartedly agree, that having a strong social network is helpful when you are going through a trial.

What do you think? Can you take a minute to open your cancer journal, and write about what Brenda said? Were you alone throughout your journey, or surrounded by others? Do you think being part of a group - a group like Sister Survivors, or even a group of personal friends - is going to help you?

By-the-way, I love to read Brenda's posts every week. She is a great writer. She recently lost her husband - something that was very unexpected - and my heart goes out to her. I think about her each week I read her post. Check out her website - she has so many helpful things there. I know you'll love her too.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Merry Christmas!

Ladies -

This week is crazy busy, with all the Christmas preparations. I've been so busy, in fact, that I have barely any Christmas shopping done. So, I'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and let you know that I won't be posting on this blog for this week, but next week I'll get back to posting each day. Let me leave you with this post, by Kathy Christensen - guest blogger... enjoy your holidays, and count your blessings!

-Kara

"Last weekend I traveled to St. George to spend time with my mother who is in the final stages of Multiple Myaloma (Cancer of the bone marrow. We are no strangers to Cancer in my family. Dad has survived Colon Cancer,Prostate Cancer, and also has skin cancers removed on a regular basis. I am a Breast Cancer Survivor and thankfully received the report this week that my follow up mammogram was clean and Cancer free.

As I spent these precious moments with my mother, I looked on this blessed Christmas Season with a new and profound gratitude. My mother's days are now numbered. She is made more comfortable and pain free by Methadone, Oxygen and Ativan for anxiousness. As I pondered in my mind the significance of this holiday and why we celebrate it, I realized (or rediscovered) that my mother is going to a far better place. She lost a little girl with Liver disease over 50 years ago and that baby (Cindy was her name)has waited a long time to have her mother back.

As we gather on Christmas Eve this year with our family, we will once again celebrate the life and mission of our Savior Jesus Christ. His life and mission are the most precious gifts that any of us will ever receive. Because of Him, we know our loved ones are not gone forever; they are just absent for a short time until we will eventually, at our appointed time, join them never again to be separated.

Despite the fact that Cancer is NOT my friend, I will be forever grateful in the part it has played to strengthen my level of gratitude for this knowledge and the strength it gives me each and every day of my life."

TUESDAY TIDINGS - A Breast Cancer Survivor's Blog...

I found a blog about a woman's breast cancer journey a little over a year ago that I really felt the need to follow. Why? Well, first, this woman was of the same faith I am, so many of the things she wrote about during her cancer journey resonated with me and touched me deeply. When I started reading her blog, she was close to the end of her cancer journey. She was diagnosed in 2007, and I found the blog at the end of 2009. One of the first things I read about was her decision to stop fighting the cancer with chemo, and live the rest of her life free from the complications chemo caused. This is the second reason I decided to follow her blog. I wanted to understand this decision she made. It was a tough one, and I'm not sure what I would have done in a similar situation. Another reason... her faith was so strong that it grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I found myself cheering for her, crying with her, hoping with her. And then came the day that I found out she had died. It was a hard thing for me to read about. She had several young children, and a wonderful husband - and I found myself wishing that she was still here. I don't think I've been as touched by any other blog as I have with Amber's.

Some of the things that I remember her saying...

"There are days when I long for heaven, and days when I long to stay here on Earth."

"I am trying to live well, and trying to die well. It is a difficult thing to do."

"I am a woman of faith, and I know that God's plan was not for me to beat my cancer. I know He has a purpose for calling me home early, and I know that I will be my children's guardian angel after I die."

It's been a year now since Amber Chase passed away, and I just stumbled on her blog again. So, I thought I'd share it with you. All of her writings are archived there - if you wish to read any of the posts, simply click on the archives, and the posts will show up down the left side of the blog.

Be aware that some of these posts can be difficult to read, especially if you are still going through your cancer journey. It is not my intent to upset anyone, or make things harder for anyone. So, if you think you need to wait awhile before visiting this blog, that's fine. However, it is very inspirational. Hopefully you'll find something in Amber's writings that will help you.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Some of Our Member Survivors Featured in Forbes Magazine...

A few months ago, a writer from Forbes Magazine contacted me through this blog. She discovered the Sister Survivors blog while working on a story about illness in the workplace for the Leadership/Careers section of the magazine. She was, quote, "writing about how employees should deal empathetically and respectfully with a colleague who may have fallen ill." She asked if I could put her in touch with some survivors who could answer some questions for the article. I email the survivors on our list about this. I haven't heard anything about it since that time.

Yesterday I received an email from the writer - Sara Peck. She sent me the link for her article. I was surprised to find, as I read the article, that all of the women interviewed were from our group! Here is the link, if you are interested in reading the article at Forbes...

MONDAY MEMOIRS - Fellow Survivors - Sisters...

This last week - on Thursday - Sister Survivors had their Kick Off. It was such a pleasant night. I met many new breast cancer "sisters". I wish I would have had more time to talk to them. Today, I thought it would be good to write about the other breast cancer survivors we've met throughout our cancer journeys.

For me, meeting other women who have gone through this has been an important step in my healing.

First, there were the women in my family and my friends - they helped me see that there is hope - that I can do what it takes to fight breast cancer.

Then there were the women I saw at the hospital/medical centers... those having chemo, or tests. I learned to recognize them by their bald heads, and beautiful countenances. These were my fellow survivors - and they helped me realize that I wasn't the only one fighting breast cancer.

Finally, there are those women I've met through Sister Survivors. These women have a passion similar to mine. We all want to make sure something good comes from our cancer battle - and helping other women with the fight is an important part of that.

Open your cancer journal today, and write about some of the women you've met who have helped you make sense of your cancer journey. Gratitude is the key here - keep your gratitude in mind while thinking of who to write about.

TUESDAY TIDINGS - An Breast Cancer Survivor... an Incredible Woman!

I thought I'd let you know about an interview I'm doing over on my Incredible Women blog this week...

Lynn is a 2 time Breast Cancer survivor - and someone I've waited a year to interview. She is quite a unique woman - just like each of you. A year ago, when the Incredible Women blog went PINK for the month of October, I sent out questions to a bunch of Breast Cancer survivors. Lynn was one of them. She had actually seen the blog, and contacted me earlier. That's when I was introduced to her and her cancer blog...

www.learningfromlynn.blogspot.com

Lynn has written almost 700 posts on her blog in the last 2 1/2 years! It is one of the most helpful, inspiring blogs I've ever read. I love it. One thing that Lynn includes at the end of her posts is quotes. I loved the quote from a post a few days ago - I've added it to our right sidebar - go have a look! Her cancer story is amazing, her blog is wonderful... what more can I say? If you have a few minutes each day this week, I encourage you to visit Incredible Women and read about Lynn - each day there are 2 questions/answers for the whole week. And, don't forget to visit her blog - Learning From Lynn. You really will learn lots.

BTW - I've added Lynn's blog to our Sister Survivor's blog list. Just look near the bottom of the left sidebar.

Have a great day!

MONDAY MEMOIRS - Service...

Today, I thought I'd share with you what our Sister Survivor group did at the meeting last Thursday. We've been trying to get ready for the big Kick Off that is on October 28th, and Bethanie, Colette, and I really needed some help. Dr. Bishop and his staff have done so much, but I'm finding out that planning and executing something this big takes a bunch of willing hands. So, I sent an email to the members of Sister Survivors, asking them to show up on Thursday to help.

In planning for Thursday night, I started to get worried that we would have too many people, and not enough to do. So instead of just wrapping up all of the silent auction gifts, I thought maybe they could help to change the date on the 1500 fliers that were already printed (we originally had the 7th for the Kick-Off), and then maybe we could make a few blankets for some women going through chemo. As the night drew nearer, I started to worry that we wouldn't get everything done that we had planned. (I worry about a lot of things! Haha!) Anyway, I shouldn't have worried - the ladies came through and showed up (there were 20 there that night!), and worked hard. We got everything done! And I have to say - I think it was the funnest Sister Survivors meeting we've had. I loved every minutes of it. I told Dr. Bishop that many hands make happy hearts, and I believe that. It was so thrilling to see how happy everyone was to be serving others. It was just a great night. Bethanie mentioned to me later, that she had noticed the interaction between the Sister Survivors, and loved the conversations that were taking place. Two of the Sister Survivors brought their daughters along to help, and my sister, Kris, came as well. Kris took lots of pictures - I thought I'd share them here. And, once again, thanks to Colette's brother, Scott, for allowing us the use of the board room at his law offices.

By-the-way, if you are expecting a MONDAY MEMOIRS today, get out your cancer journal and write about ways you have served since your cancer diagnosis - or ways you plan to serve once you feel better. I know I've wanted to give back in some way, just to "pay it forward" - to honor those who helped me so much during my cancer journey. One way I'm trying to serve is to be involved with this wonderful group of survivors and patients - it makes me happy to help those who have to deal with the same monster that I did.

Here are the pictures - ENJOY!

And, here is the result of our hard work:

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - I know SO many Incredible Women - Breast Cancer Survivors Among Them...

In the last two years, since my diagnosis, I've been blessed to meet and become acquainted with many wonderful women - women who have helped me, served me, taken care of me. I've also met many women who have been diagnosed with the same cancer I had, and I am grateful to know so many incredible women!

One year ago, I started a blog called Incredible Women - somewhere I could celebrate all of those women who have become such an important part of my life. It's a place I can share the women who mean so much to me, and where my readers can nominate other incredible women.

Take a few minutes to visit the blog - Incredible Women - and read about the past year of features. I'm starting a new year of celebration in September. I hope to share many more every-day women who make a difference this year.

To all of you breast cancer survivors that I've met - and admire SO much - I'm grateful to be able to add you to my growing list of Incredible Women. Thank you for making such an important impact on my life.

I love you all.

-Kara
